The Best Places For Working Remotely In London

by Stefano Andrean

Being your own boss has numerous perks: creating your own schedule, deciding your projects, and being able to work wherever you want. While pursuing your passion has allowed you the freedom to work from your couch at home, trading your suit for your skivvies, you may occasionally find yourself in a motivation rut, yearning to work around others who are like-minded, or just needing a change of scenery (whether out of boredom or to avoid the growing pile of laundry–we won’t judge). If you’re lucky enough to live in London, or happen to be visiting our favourite city, there’s plenty of places to cure your cabin fever and reignite your creativity. Here’s some of our favourite places to work remotely, all equipped with free Wifi, plenty of sockets, and your obligatory caffeine fix.

St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel Lobby

Euston Rd, Kings Cross, London NW1 2AR

Closest Tube: King’s Cross St. Pancras

With stunning cathedral archways and rich red tones covering the walls, it’s hard not to feel inspired (and a bit glamorous) in the gothic revival building. Originally constructed in 1873, the old walls illicit a feeling of warmth and comfort and that you simply don’t get in the standard co-working space. The staff is excellent and so is the seating, just make sure to order something as a universally acceptable “thank you” for working in the lobby–we highly recommend a cappuccino if you’re feeling a bit sleepy or an order of fries if you’re peckish. Bonus: if you get bored or need to stretch your legs, the double spiral staircase is a beautiful sight to take in and makes for a great Instagram photo. Need to relax? Book an appointment with the St. Pancras Spa downstairs for an aromatherapy massage or use of their relaxation lounge. Working hard shouldn’t hurt.

Ace Hotel London Lobby

100 Shoreditch High St, London E1 6JQ

Closest Tube: Shoreditch High Street

Another cosy hotel lobby, the Ace Hotel Lobby offers a long table upfront fitted with plenty of charging space, surrounded by the hotel’s cafe and bar so you can get your fix regardless of what you’re craving (or needing after a difficult client call). The front lobby can occasionally be a bit crowded, but luckily the Hoi Polloi restaurant just inside the hotel also serves up charging outlets in every booth alongside their free Wifi. We recommend snacking on the pickled onion rings with gorgonzola dip or fried cauliflower with tarragon yoghurt dip to help power your brain through your next breakthrough. While Hoi Polloi is open from 7AM to midnight, the Ace lobby is open 24/7 so there’s no need to worry about getting your world-changing idea at 2AM and having no space to work.

The Hoxton, Shoreditch

81 Great Eastern St, London EC2A 3HU

Closest Tube: Old Street

Cosy and eclectic interiors, The Hoxton is another hotel lobby that’s open for use 24/7–just try to get a space by the windows where the plugs are. Bonus: The Hoxton has a variety of meeting spaces you can reserve, with access to a great snack pantry filled to the brim with tea, coffee, biscuits, and whatever other bits-and-bobs your heart can desire. In other words, you’ll be all set to smash your next meeting with that important client. Hungry? The Hoxton Grill at the Shoreditch location is open from 7AM-2AM Monday-Saturday and from 7AM-midnight on Sundays, serving up yummy treats to get you through whatever the day brings. We recommend the zucchini fries, mac & cheese, or the turkey BLT as snacks to keep you inspired.

Note: there’s also The Hoxton in Holborn that makes for a fab 24/7 workspace, also equipped with meeting rooms for hire. All the same information as above, but minus the Grill. You can find them at 199-206 High Holborn, London WC1V 7BD. Closest Tube: Holborn Station.

The British Library

96 Euston Rd, London NW1 2DB

Closest Tube: King’s Cross St. Pancras

Housing some of the greatest works in history, including but certainly not limited to Da Vinci’s notebook, manuscripts from Virginia Woolf, and the all-important Magna Carta, UK’s national library is one of the best places to plant yourself and crack on with your work that will impact the trajectory of humanity. In addition to cosy corners, free wifi, and plenty of charging space, the library also hosts a wonderful cafe, coffee supplied by expert London roaster Nude Espresso and a variety of sandwiches to get you through the afternoon. The library is open from 9:30AM-8PM Monday-Thursday, 9:30AM-6PM Friday, 9:30AM-5PM Saturday, and 11-5PM Sunday. Who knows, if you work here enough, your scribbled notes may be exhibited later, giving insight to future generations on your world-changing ideas.

Google Campus

4-5 Bonhill St, Shoreditch, London EC2A 4BX

Closest Tube: Old Street

Based in Shoreditch, Google Campus has an entire floor dedicated to free co-working space, just register online first! They serve up coffee and healthy snacks to fuel your brain, and occasionally offer interesting events, seminars, and expert summits so you can continue to stay on-top of changes and innovations in your industry and stay competitive. Open 8AM-6PM daily.

Various Locations throughout London

Free Wifi, hot food, cold beer, plenty of seating–what more do you need? One of the best chain breweries in existence, BrewDog is one of our favourite places not only for brunch, lunch, snacks, and dinner, but it’s also a great place to get work done. The wifi is strong and most of the booths have charging outlets (you seat yourself, so you don’t have to go through the embarrassing “um, actually, do you have a space with outlets?” routine), so you can sit here from open to close getting stuff done. Food-wise, everything is incredible. The chicken wings and buffalo cauliflower are our favourite snack bits, but if you’re looking for a meal, their Patriot burger is one of the best burgers I’ve had in my life. As I’m from Texas, you know my standards for burgers are pretty high. Beyond that, is there any better way to cap-off your hard work day than with a cold craft beer?

The Office at The Shard

32 London Bridge St, London SE1 9SG

Closest Tube: London Bridge

Wanting to take your work to the next level–literally? The Office at The Shard, part of The Office Group, sits on the 24th and 25th floors of the iconic building. Offering up focus focus booths, meeting rooms for hire, and kitchen and dining spaces, you’re all set for a productive day and stunning views of London. Bonus: Membership gets you into all 33 of TOG’s working spaces across London.

Mortimer House

37-41 Mortimer St, Fitzrovia, London W1T 3JH

Closest Tube: Goodge Street

With opulent Art Deco interiors, working here hardly feels like work at all. The Fitzrovia co-working space has a focus on health and wellness, offering its members access to a pilates and yoga studio, fitness classes, and a meditation room, all served up with “room service” to your desk of healthy meals, drinks, and other tidbits. Mortimer House also features a variety of unique meeting and event rooms for hire, with our personal favourite being the Conservatory.

Multiple locations in Shoreditch, Clerkenwell, and West London

Funky, modern interiors, with multiple breakout spaces, bottomless tea and coffee, meeting rooms and private phone booths–Huckletree coworking spaces have it all, but with a fun twist. The 80’s-esque graphic interiors feel fresh and fun, a stark contrast from many of the co-working spaces in London. Members can enjoy great seminars, get free products from similar brands, take part in the wellness program (hip-hop yoga anyone?) and network with other members at weekly drinks to spark new collaborations.

The Studio

61-63 Rochester Pl, London NW1 9JU

Closest Tube: Camden Town

Our home. We love working here at The Studio: endless espresso, tea, biscuits and fruit, bottles of champagne randomly brought in through the office to share, with a variety of workspaces. Whether needing a desk, private office, meeting room, or breakout area, The Studio has you covered. Equipped with smart boards, smart TVs, plenty of charging outlets, plus private phone booths, it’s the perfect space to collaborate or crack on with work solo. Moreover, it offers great events every week to keep you inspired. The Studio offers one-day access for free, but members can access the space 24/7, 365 days a year. We may or may not have slept on the Chesterfield sofa a time or two while pulling a late night, but just know it’s incredibly comfortable.
